Supplemental Materials for Massage Instructors
As a longtime massage therapist and instructor, I originally wrote Somatic Patterning (SP) to serve primarily as a comprehensive sourcebook. But because somatic patterning is best taught through nonlinear exercises and experiential activities, many instructors realized that it is a well-suited educational subject for the unique learning style of today’s Net generation massage students. With this in mind, I am currently revising SP into a dedicated textbook to make it more user-friendly and make your job easier in sharing this complex yet dynamic, healing, and much-needed material with this new generation of students.
The new textbook edition of Somatic Patterning will be available by the end of 2012. In the meantime, you’ll find the following supplemental instructor materials in the chapter links below:

To make the body-mind connection in the classroom, it is helpful to alternate between cognitive and experiential exercises. Somatic Patterning (SP) offers a lot for exercises to balance cognitive learning with experiential learning, which can help students make the deep somatic changes that promote healing and allow them to more easily relax and embody the material. This, in turn, can help students become more grounded and responsive massage therapists.

Postural Muscle Exercises
The postural muscles in the trunk are organized like the notes on a flute, from the base of the trunk to the base of the skull.
These exercises not only improve your posture, they are easy to practice plus they alleviate chronic pain and prevent injury by stabilizing your spine. They will also improve the way you look and feel.
I like to teach postural muscle excercises using the analogy of a "postural flute." First you practice simple isomteric exercises for each postural muscle, then you learn to play your postural flute by con-contracting them along the trunk.
To learn more about the postural flute, click this link to find article 9 tilted "Muscles and the Postural Flute" on the bottom of the page.
You can also find information and exercises for postural muscle training in Chapter 9 of Somatic Patterning.
For more information about how I integrate postural muscles into bodywork session, call Mary Ann at 303-682-5900 today for a consultaiton or to schedule a private session or movement lesson.
